A model small enough for one consumer graphics card now writes valid interface code 71.7% of the time, up from 13.0%. Valid is not the same as yours, and the research on making generated screens follow a product's design is a study of 12 people.

The top two things blocking designers are not model quality. They are the time it takes to learn a tool, at 55.7%, and having too many tools to evaluate, at 53.0%. The average designer now runs 7 AI tools, up from 3 a year earlier.

5% of design system teams measure return on investment. Satisfaction with leadership buy-in fell to 32% this year, and 61% say they do not have enough people. Those three numbers are one problem, and only part of it is fixable this week.

74% of designers at companies over 2,000 people use internal AI tools. At companies under 50, it is 26%. The smaller companies are the ones more likely to call AI central to their work, which means the gap is about who gets tooling shaped around their own context.

Design tokens are now in almost every system, and the file format they travel in has been a stable standard since late 2025. The automation between the two ends never got built: 60% of teams have none. The missing piece was never the format.

AI research keeps rediscovering this on purpose. Most design work still does it by accident, if at all.

Designers doing development work nearly doubled this year, and 20% of designers say collaboration decreased anyway, four times last year's rate. Both numbers come from real 2026 surveys. Neither one is wrong, and holding both at once tells you more than picking the flattering one.
