Design tokens are now in almost every system, and the file format they travel in has been a stable standard since late 2025. The automation between the two ends never got built: 60% of teams have none. The missing piece was never the format.

Anthropic's own frontend-design skill forces an agent to pick a specific aesthetic direction before writing code, because the model won't reach for one on its own. A February 2026 benchmark shows why that has to be a human call: the best model scored 26.5% on aesthetic judgment against a 68.9% human-expert baseline. The job that's left is choosing the direction, not making the pixels.

Anthropic made Agent Skills an open standard in December 2025 and opened a reviewed plugin directory in May 2026. Between them, a piece of design judgement can now be written once, installed, and run by an agent on work nobody has looked at yet. The half of critique that is a checklist travels well. The half that is taste still scores 26.5% against a human expert.

The EU AI Act's transparency rules became enforceable on August 2, 2026, with fines up to 7% of global turnover attached to how clearly an interface discloses a chatbot, AI-generated content, or a deepfake. That used to be a UX nicety a team could deprioritise. It's now a compliance surface with a number on it.
